Dave Gibbons to curate Watchmen art on the Southbank

Watchmen Southbank

Original Watchmen illustrator Dave Gibbons is set to curate a 3D graffiti art installation in London on Tuesday 28th July.

Along with graffiti artist CHU he is going to re-create key scenes from the film in 3D comic book style at the The Skate Park below London’s Southbank Centre from 2pm – 5pm.

The event is to tie in with the DVD & Blu-ray release of Watchmen, which Paramount are releasing on Monday 27th.

The 2-disc DVD comes with about 2 hours of special features, including ‘Real Superheroes, Real Vigilantes’, 11 Webisodes, four viral videos and the music video for the My Chemical Romance version of the Bob Dylan song, “Desolation Row”, which was recorded for the film.

Bruno gets a 15 certificate version

[ad]

Bruno 15 version

Brüno is going to get a 15-certificate version that will play alongside the 18-certificate one that topped the UK box office this weekend.

Universal have decided that a key segment of the audience was missing out on the film and (presumably) that it was a great opportunity to keep the publicity going.

Over the last weekend it grossed just over £5 million at 457 locations, making it the best debut for an 18 rated film since Hannibal in February 2001.

It didn’t quite match the opening of Borat, which opened in November 2006 with £6.24m, although that included previews which grossed nearly a £1 million.

The 15-certificate version of Bruno will be released on 24th July for the benefit of teenage fans.

David Kosse, the president of Universal Pictures UK, has admitted that the distributor had originally hoped to get a 15 but wouldn’t make the ‘substantial cuts’ in order to do so.

The three scenes which have been trimmed are:

  • The sequence where Bruno is miming graphic sexuals acts with a dead member of Milli Vanilli that he has ‘contacted’ through a medium
  • The sex scene early in the film with his boyfirend and all manner of sex toys
  • The swingers party sequence

The official BBFC statement on the new ‘snipped’ version says:

This film was originally shown to the BBFC in an unfinished version.

The BBFC advised the company that the film was likely to receive an ’18’ classification but that the requested ’15’ certificate could be achieved by making changes to three scenes.

In particular the BBFC suggested that the company remove the majority of a montage of exaggerated sexual activity between Bruno and his boyfriend; Bruno comically miming fellatio and anilingus as he pretends to have oral sex with a deceased person with whom he is in contact through a medium; and sex between couples at a swingers’ party and aggressive sexual dialogue at the same party.

When this version of the feature was submitted these changes had been made and the film was classified ’15’.

A previous version of the feature was submitted without these changes and was classified at ’18’.

In total about 1 minute, 50 seconds have been taken out of the 18 version in order make the new certificate.

Kosse has said:

“Over the past couple of weeks we got a lot of feedback from exhibitors and fans on Facebook. So we investigated what it would take to get a 15.”

“We saw an opportunity to service the audience … and it should also help with the gross.”

The big question this raises is whether this was all planned in advance. Given how smart the marketing has been for the film I suspect it may have been.

Interestingly, Universal doesn’t plan to make similar cuts in other overseas markets (including Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa) because they have had significantly lower ratings in those countries.

In the U.S. and Canada, where it was rated R, Bruno had a solid opening of $30.6 million, although business fell sharply on the Saturday which suggests some audiences were a little freaked out by what they saw.

And we’re back

Mogwai on keyboard

If you have been visiting this site over the last couple of weeks you may have noticed that Google has flagged it as being ‘unsafe’ and being ‘harmful to your computer!’

To cut a long story short, someone (possibly) hacked part of my part of my site and infected it with malware which caused Google to flag it as being unsafe.

If you use IE you might have got this warning:

Google IE Warning

If you were browing in Firefox you would have seen this hysterical warning:

Firefox warning

It appeared to be a couple of archive pages from this year that were causing problems although you could be forgiven for thinking from the above warning that I was planning to blow up the entire Internet with help from Russian spammers and Al-Qaeda’s IT department.

The basic deal is that sites like mine can be compromised without owners knowing about it until you get flagged.

It’s a bit of Catch 22 – you don’t know there is a problem until it is pointed out to you and then it takes a while to a) figure out what is wrong, b) fix the problem and c) get Google to see if it is fixed.

For more information just visit www.stopbadware.org (especially this bit) which explains all of this in more detail.

In the meantime I’ve made a few technical changes to the backend of the site and tightened up the security which should mean that in a few days Google will unflag it.

Boxee now available on Windows

The open source media centre program Boxee was made available to Windows users this week.

If you haven’t heard of it before then check out this video.

In a nutshell it is an application that allows you to stream content from the web and also convert the existing media on your computer so you can watch it on a monitor or TV.

Previously only available for Mac and Linux users, it will be interesting to see how many people sign up for it.

The latest version streamlines the left-hand interface, so that you can choose between web-based sources (‘Applications’) and the files on your hard drive (‘Local Files’).

It is all very slick and I don’t think it is too much to suggest that programs like this are the future of home entertainment.

As it stands the current distribution models are split between optical discs (DVD and Blu-ray), pay TV (satellite or cable) and online (iTunes & Amazon etc).

I’ve long felt that the killer app would be the piece of software that allows you to easily find and download what you want to watch on either your TV or computer.

There have already been well-documented problems with media companies like Hulu, who are concerned about rights and platforms.

Despite these issues, Boxee still looks like the most promising step towards what watching films and TV at home will be like in the not-too-distant future.

Pixar let dying girl see ‘Up’ at home

Pixar Special Up Screening

Pixar recently arranged a home screening of their latest film Up for a 10 year old girl dying of a terminal illness.

Back in 2005, Colby Curtin was diagnosed with vascular cancer and her condition had worsened in recent months to the point that she only had days to live.

After seeing a preview at a cinema back in April, she was keen to see Up, which is about an old man who flies to South America in a floating house suspended from helium balloons.

However, by early June her condition had deteriorated to such an extent that she couldn’t leave the house.

Her mother Lisa feared that she would never get to see the film and it was at this point that a family friend named Terrell Orum started cold calling Pixar and Disney to see if anyone could help them.

After eventually getting through to Pixar, the company agreed to send an employee to Colby’s house the next day with a special DVD of ‘Up’.

When he arrived, the group gathered around for a special screening, although because of Colby’s condition her mother had to describe the events on the screen.

The employee left after the film had finished, taking the DVD with him.

Colby passed away later that evening at 9:20 p.m, just seven hours after seeing the film.

The Orange County Register reported on how thankful Colby’s mother was about the special screening:

With her daughter’s vigil planned for Friday, Lisa Curtin reflected about how grateful she is that Pixar – and “Up” – were a part of her only child’s last day.
“When I watched it, I had really no idea about the content of the theme of the movie,” said Curtin, 46. “I just know that word ‘Up’ and all of the balloons and I swear to you, for me it meant that (Colby) was going to go up. Up to heaven.”
Pixar officials declined to comment on the story or name the employees involved

David Carradine dies aged 72

David CarradineActor David Carradine has been found dead in a Bangkok hotel.

The AP report:

The officer responsible for investigating the death, Teerapop Luanseng, said the 72-year-old actor was staying at a suite at the luxury Swissotel Nai Lert Park Hotel.

“I can confirm that we found his body, naked, hanging in the closet,” Teerapop said. He said police suspected suicide.

A spokesman for the U.S. Embassy, Michael Turner, said the embassy was informed by Thai authorities that Carradine died either late Wednesday or early Thursday, but he could not provide further details out of consideration for his family.

The Thai newspaper The Nation have more details, reporting that Carradine could not be contacted after he failed to appear for a meal with the rest of the film crew on Wednesday:

Carradine, 72, was in Bangkok to shoot a movie and staying at Suite Room 352 in the Park Nai Lert Hotel on Wireless Road since June 2.

The film crew noticed his absence when they went to dine out at a restaurant on Sathon Road on Wednesday.

Carradine did not show up at the dinner and the team could not reach him. They assumed that because of his age he was resting in his room.

A hotel maid opened his suite yesterday at 10am only to find Carradine dead in a closet. He was described as being half-naked.

A police investigation showed that he hung himself with a rope, the kind that is used for curtains.

Police said he was dead not less than 12 hours and found no sign of fighting or assault.

Police said Carradine’s body was taken to a hospital for an autopsy that would be done Friday.

The son of a Hollywood acting family, Carradine was the son of Ardanelle Abigail and noted American actor John Carradine.

He was the brother of Bruce Carradine and half-brother of Keith and Robert Carradine, as well as the uncle of Ever Carradine and Martha Plimpton.

His most well known role was as the lead “Grasshopper” (aka Kwai Chang Caine) in the 70s TV show Kung Fu, which was a huge success and shelped spark the appetite for martial arts in that decade.

Other notable films he appeared in were Martin Scorsese’s Boxcar Bertha (1972), Hal Ashby’s Oscar-winning Bound for Glory (1976), Ingmar Bergman’s The Serpent’s Egg (1977) and Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill films (2003/2004) where he played the title character.

Most recently he played a 100 year-old Chinese gangster in Crank: High Voltage.

The White Ribbon wins the Palme d’Or

The White Ribbon

The White Ribbon has won the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes film festival.

Directed by Michael Haneke, it explores the strange and disturbing things that start to happen in a German village on the eve of World War I.

Shot in black and white, it has no musical score and focuses on the generation that would grow up to embrace national socialism.

The story is narrated by schoolteacher in the village and the cryptic and sombre style has already led some critics to compare it to Hidden (2005).

Pre-roll Ads on YouTube

YouTube logoDifferent UK broadcasters are going to test pre-roll ads on YouTube just weeks after the fiasco of ITV somehow not making any money out of the Susan Boyle viral video.

PaidContent report:

Separately to the renewal of its partnership with BBC Worldwide today, YouTube has agreed to trial pre-roll ads, and not just the usual display banners, on short-form UK TV clips offered by it BBCWW, Channel 4, National Geographic, ITN and Discovery partners.

Partners are able to place their own inventory, but the extent to which each is doing so varies.

Ads can last up to 30 seconds, at broadcasters’ discretion, but 15 seconds is the guideline and clips with ads must last at least one minute, YouTube told paidContent:UK.

Initial advertisers include Warner Bros, Match.com, Activision, Renault and Nissan. It kicks off with C4 running ads for WB’s The Hangover movie – but embedding of these clips is disabled.

ITV – surprise, surprise – doesn’t have a UK YouTube partnership and isn’t part of the trial (maybe not surprising given that outgoing chairman Michael Grade thinks it a ‘parasite’)

YouTube had been reluctant to use pre-rolls as they annoy users but apparently is going to test them again.

Perhaps short pre-rolls could work, but the length is debatable.

I tend to think ads around the video are a better option (from a user’s perspective) but advertisers obviously want more impact.

But can someone tell me why embedding is disabled?

This video from Channel 4, plugging a TV series called Embarrassing Illnesses, has a pre-roll ad for a new Warner Bros movie called The Hangover. (Again it can’t be embedded, so you’ll have to click through on the link).

It is about 19 seconds long. Is that too much? Will it become the norm?

I’ll be surprised if it does.

Cannes Film Festival Lineup 2009

The official lineup for the 2009 Cannes Film Festival was announced today at a press conference in Paris.

THE JURY

LA CINEFONDATION AND SHORT FILM JURY

One little interesting note.

At the end of the press conference Cannes president Gilles Jacob said:

…the Festival de Cannes has decided to continue helping independent creators as best it can.

Since our new website has greater bandwidth, we would like to offer this platform to any of the films in the Official Selection that would like to make use of it, when comes the time of their theatre release.

The idea is to present to the audience, and especially young audiences, the first 5 minutes of the film and not the usual typical trailer that extinguishes all desire.

Was it Altman or Renoir, I forget, who said that the great artists are at their best in the first and last reel? Let’s hope that Internet users everywhere might drop their games and be tempted to rush to their nearest theatre to find out what happens next.

Let’s hope so, for the sake of the artists. We make no distinction between their films.

They are all there, somewhere, in the atmosphere that surrounds us all. They are all there and available, chemically, digitally, electronically, in binary, in VOD, virtually, we can feel them, they surround us. They are looking out for us.

Let’s not abandon them.

Films We Love & Arthouse at the ICA

ICA logoThe ICA Cinema in London is always a good place to catch up with films off the beaten track and they have two upcoming seasons of films.

The first contains some interesting releases from the past and present and the other has some about artists of the 20th century.

Films We Love kicks off with the recent Wendy and Lucy and continues with offerings from Powell and Pressburger.

  • Wendy and Lucy (1- 7 May): The simple tale of a young woman (Michelle Williams) adrift in the Pacific Northwest is an elegant allegory for modern American life, with not a shot or a word wasted.
  • The Good, The Bad and the Weird (2 – 4 May): The action is handsome and inventive, the pace is full-throttle and director Kim Jee-woon proves that he’s one of cinema’s most exciting storytellers.
  • The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (23, 30 May 2009): Powell and Pressburger’s stately, intimate drama about Boer War and World War I veteran Clive Candy.
  • A Matter of Life and Death (24, 30 May 2009): A visionary and witty fantasy from The Archers that finds a World War II pilot (David Niven) attempting to cheat death and almost falling prey to a cunning staircase.
  • Black Narcissus (29, 31 May 2009): Powell and Pressburger’s highly charged drama sees Deborah Kerr among the nuns getting hot under their habits in the Himalayas.

Arthouse continues our series of documenting 20th-century artists, with films featuring subjects as diverse as the sculptures of Louise Bourgeois Andy Warhol’s infamous Campbell’s soup cans.

  • Louise Bourgeois: The Spider, the Mistress and the Tangerine (22, 24, 26, 30 – 31 May 2009): A fascinating, expansive documentary that attempts to get at the heart of Bourgeois’ beautiful, bold and often mysterious work.
  • Painters Painting (23, 25, 28, 31 May 2009): In 1973, Emile de Antonio interviews artists including Willem de Kooning, Jasper Johns, Andy Warhol and Barnett Newman.
  • Alice Neel (23, 27, 30 May 2009): A tender look at the life of Alice Neel, whose paintings were embraced in the 70s, some 50 years after she began to work.

TCM’s Most Influential Classic Movies

TCM logoTCM, which is 15 years old this month, have published a list of the Most Influential Classic Movies.

Normally I’m a little sceptical about these kinds of lists, but this one is pretty hard to argue with.

  1. The Birth of a Nation (1915)
  2. Battleship Potemkin (1925)
  3. Metropolis (1927)
  4. 42nd Street (1933)
  5. It Happened One Night (1934)
  6. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)
  7. Gone with the Wind (1939)
  8. Stagecoach (1939)
  9. Citizen Kane (1941)
  10. The Bicycle Thief (1947)
  11. Rashomon (1950)
  12. The Searchers (1956)
  13. Breathless (1959)
  14. Psycho (1960)
  15. Star Wars (1977)

I think a more challenging exercise might be to list films over the last 30 years that will have a similar status in future.

Off the top of my head I’d go for:

  • Halloween (helped kick start 80s boogeyman horror)
  • Blade Runner (influenced the look of pop culture)
  • Die Hard (the template for many action blockbusters)
  • Sex Lies and Videotape (began the Sundance indie movement)
  • Pulp Fiction (led to many, inferior, crime imitators)
  • Toy Story (the dawn of CGI animation in the modern era)
  • The Matrix (a massive influence on action films over the last decade, despite the inferior sequels)

But what about the last decade?

Wolverine leaks on to the web

Wolverine Piracy

A decent work print of Wolverine has been leaked and is now doing the rounds on various file sharing sites.

For those not familiar with the film, it is a prequel to the X-Men trilogy, focusing on the mutant Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), is directed by Gavin Hood and due for worldwide release on May 1st.

Part of me thought that this was some kind of April Fool’s Joke but if you go to one of the most (in)famous torrent sites – you know, the one from Sweden – then you will see that the most popular torrent is indeed the new X-Men prequel.

Here is a screen grab of what happens when you do a search:

wolverine-screengrab

Drew McWeeny at Hitfix reports:

20th Century Fox is about to have an interesting practical test on one of their biggest summer films.

“X-Men Origins: Wolverine” leaked online today in what appears to be a near-finished DVD quality rip, marred only by a few unfinished FX shots.

As soon as files go up, they’re coming right back down as Fox legal chases pirates around the web, but that toothpaste is out of the tube, gentlemen.

He also got this statement from 20th Century Fox:

“Last night, a stolen, incomplete and early version of X-Men Origins: Wolverine was posted illegally on a website.

It was without many effects, had missing and unedited scenes and temporary sound and music.

We immediately contacted the appropriate legal authorities and had it removed.

We forensically mark our content so we can identify sources that make it available or download it.

The source of the initial leak and any subsequent postings will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law – the courts have handed down significant criminal sentences for such acts in the past.

The FBI and the MPAA also are actively investigating this crime.

We are encouraged by the support of fansites condemning this illegal posting and pointing out that such theft undermines the enormous efforts of the filmmakers and actors, and above all, hurts the fans of the film.”

There is no doubt that this is a big deal.

Although there have been leaks before on films like Hostel 2 and Sicko, whilst those films opened at cinemas, I can’t really remember a summer blockbuster leaking like this online.

One can only assume that it came from someone who had access to a digital copy of the whole film.

Someone at an organisation involved in post production? Maybe a disgruntled employee somewhere in the production food chain? Perhaps a superhacker who got access to a secure FTP site?

Given the high profile nature of the production I imagine Tom Rothman and Jim Gianopulos will be paying a lot of time and money to get to the bottom of it.

Obviously, it is an embarrassing security issue for a major studio on a tent-pole production but they will also be concerned about how it impacts the opening box office.

I may be wrong, but I don’t think it will have as much of an impact as some think.

For a film like this, with millions spent on marketing before it opens on thousands of screens around the globe, a big opening is essentially guarenteed.

DVD screeners of Oscar season movies have been pirated for several years now and the box office impact of that is debatable.

However, this episode certainly gives Fox a good excuse if Wolverine doesn’t have a good opening.

But what if it doesn’t? What exactly does a high profile torrent leak actually mean in practical terms? And can we really reach a conclusion based on one film?

My gut feeling is that torrent sites are a bit too fiddly and complicated for the mass online audience.

But then again, maybe it will have an impact.

Time will tell.

BBC News report:

The date and location of the footage, posted by a Tibetan exile group, cannot be ascertained.

A Chinese government spokesman would not confirm whether YouTube had indeed been blocked.

China has a history of blocking websites which carry messages it views as politically unacceptable.

The site has been carrying a graphic video released by Tibetan exiles, which shows hundreds of uniformed Chinese troops swarming through a Tibetan monastery – a group of troops beat a man with batons.

The Perils of an Oscar Hoax

Some prankster has released what is almost certainly a fake document detailing the ‘Oscar winners’ on Sunday.

Oscar hoax 2009

It is purportedly a ‘memo’ from AMPAS President Sid Ganis, but not only does it look fake, they have also made the mistake of listing Ben Burtt as working on The Dark Knight (he didn’t).

Academy spokesperson Leslie Unger has issued a stern denial to Entertainment Weekly, saying:

”The document is a complete fraud.

PricewaterhouseCoopers is still counting the ballots and there are only two people there who will know the complete list of winners in advance of the envelopes being opened during the ceremony.

The Academy’s president is not advised of the winners in advance and no such list is created with his name on it.”

However, in some respects, it is a sly hoax as the purported ‘winners’ in the big categories are heavily tipped to win anyway (Slumdog Millionaire for Best Picture, Danny Boyle for Best Director, Mickey Rourke for Best Actor and Kate Winslet for Best Actress).

Oscar hoax 2009 close-up

So, the nightmare scenario for the Academy will be the (highly unlikely) event in which all these ‘predictions’ come in.

Even if it was a fake, a lot of people might not believe protestations to the contrary.

But it is worth remembering how the voting process actually works.

Once the ballots are in, the accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers tabulates the nominee ballot votes in secrecy.

The Academy then announces the nominees in an early morning press conference and soon after the Academy mails the final ballots to all members.

They then have two weeks to return their final votes and then polling is closed.

PricewaterhouseCoopers tabulates the votes in absolute secrecy and seals the results.

After all the ballots are in, and the votes are counted, it all comes down to the actual night itself.

There is an urban myth that in 1992 Marisa Tomei was wrongly awarded the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress because the presenter Jack Palance read the wrong winner out.

However, one of the reasons this isn’t true is because, since 1953, two representatives from PriceWaterhouseCoopers are waiting in the wings when each award is announced.

If, for some reason, the presenter announced the wrong winner then they would come on stage and re-announce the real winner.

But if the hoax winners correspond to the real ones, expect the conspiracy theories to begin in earnest.

Cheap Prices at The Prince Charles Cinema

Prince Charles Cinema 05.04.05

I just got this email from The Prince Charles Cinema, which for those who don’t know, is  repertory cinema located in Leicester Place, just north of Leicester Square in London’s West End.

It is a fantastic venue for any film lover as it shows a wide variety of films including cult, arthouse and classic films alongside recent Hollywood releases.

One thing that has always been startling about the place is the cheap tickets prices and in the email they just sent me is a reminder of how cheap they are compared to the average cinema in the West End.

Cinema Name Weekday Matinee Weekday Evening Weekend
The Prince Charles  £1.50 / £4 £3.50 / £5 £3.50 / £5
The Curzon £8 £12 £12
The Vue £11.90 £13.50 £11.90 – £13.50
The Empire £9.95  £9.95  £9.95
Odeon Leicester Sq / Mezzanine £9 – £14 £9.50 – £19  £9.50 – £19

The differences are pretty remarkable, especially given that it is the only truly independent cinema left in Central London.

If you are planning a trip to London and haven’t yet discovered the Prince Charles, then it is well worth a visit.

Christian Bale rant on Terminator Salvation set

Christian Bale rant

Audio has surfaced on the web of Christian Bale going absolutely ballistic on the set of Terminator Salvation last summer.

Have a listen to the full NSFW rant here:

[audio:http://filmdetail.receptionmedia.com/christian_bale_terminator_salvation_set_rant.mp3]

It appears from the audio, first posted on TMZ on Monday, that Bale (who plays John Connor in the film) got angry after cinematographer Shane Hurlbut walked within his frame of view during filming for a second time.

During the heated exchange, which reportedly was recorded in July 2008, days before Bale began promoting The Dark Knight in London (where he was arrested on allegation of assault), the actor can clearly be heard ranting angrily toward Hurlbut.

TMZ report:

It happened on the set after a director of photography accidentally ruined a scene by walking onto the set.

Bale lost it, screaming, yelling and threatening to quit if the bosses didn’t fire the dude.

Film execs sent the tape to the insurance company that insured the film in case Bale bailed.

According to a source close to the film who spoke to Access Hollywood, despite the incident, Terminator Salvation wrapped up and no one was fired.

The actor and Hurlbut have also reportedly made up.

The film’s assistant director Bruce Franklin – who can be heard in the tape – told E-Online:

If you are working in a very intense scene and someone takes you out of your groove…

It was the most emotional scene in the movie. And for him to get stopped in the middle of it – he is very intensely involved in his character.

‘He didn’t walk around like that all day long. It was just a moment and it passed.

This was my second movie with Christian, and it has always been a good experience with him. He is so dedicated to the craft.

‘I think someone is begging to make some noise [controversy] about this, but I don’t think it’s fair. The art of acting is not paint by numbers, it’s an art form.’

However, once something like this gets out people can have all kinds of fun with it.

This dance remix by Revolucian is very impressive:

There is also a ‘Christian Bale And I Are Done Profesionally’ T-Shirt at Despair.com, a soundboard created by UGO and even a bizarre photo montage comparing him to Kermit the Frog has resurfaced.

UPDATED 06/02/09

The Bale audio made some waves on BBC Breakfast this week when someone forget to edit out the F-word:

And the actor also rang the LA radio station KROQ to apologise and explain what happened.

Christian Bale calls KROQ

Listen to the call here:

[audio:http://filmdetail.receptionmedia.com/Christian_Bale_Apology_Call_to_KROQ.mp3]

If anything, this whole affair has provided a lot of free publicity for the film.
