When the festival began in 1939 the top prize at the festival was known as the Grand Prix<\/a>.<\/p>\n But in 1955 the Festival started to award the best film a golden palm, in tribute to the coat of arms of the City of Cannes<\/a>.<\/p>\n Here is a list of winners since 1955:<\/p>\n 1955 \tMarty<\/strong><\/a> (Dir.
