DVD PICKS<\/strong> L.A. Confidential<\/a><\/strong> (Warner): The acclaimed\u00a01997<\/a>\u00a0adaptation of\u00a0James Ellroy’s<\/a>\u00a0novel<\/a>\u00a0gets a\u00a02-disc special edition re-release.\u00a0Directed by\u00a0Curtis Hanson<\/a>\u00a0and co-written by\u00a0Brian Helgeland<\/a>, it explores corruption within the Los Angeles<\/a>\u00a0police<\/a>\u00a0in the 1950s and its connection to\u00a0Hollywood<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n It provided substantial roles for\u00a0Russell Crowe<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Guy Pearce<\/a>\u00a0early in their mainstream careers and featured sterling work by\u00a0Kim Basinger<\/a>\u00a0(who won an Oscar),\u00a0Danny DeVito<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Kevin Spacey<\/a>\u00a0in the supporting cast.<\/p>\n The film still stands up today as a deeply satisfying crime thriller and the extras are as follows:<\/p>\n Disc 2<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Generation Kill<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(HBO): A 7-part\u00a0HBO<\/a>\u00a0television<\/a>\u00a0miniseries<\/a>\u00a0based on the\u00a0book of the same name<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0Evan Wright<\/a>, adapted for television by\u00a0David Simon<\/a>\u00a0(best known for his work on\u00a0The Wire<\/a>),\u00a0Ed Burns<\/a>, and Wright.<\/p>\n Wright’s book detailed his experiences\u00a0writing for\u00a0Rolling Stone<\/a>\u00a0as an\u00a0embedded reporter<\/a>\u00a0with the\u00a01st Reconnaissance Battalion\u200e<\/a>\u00a0of the\u00a0United States Marine Corps<\/a>\u00a0during the\u00a02003 invasion of Iraq<\/a>.<\/p>\n Although different in many ways to The Wire, it is an impressive portrait of the first 40 days of the Iraq war from the perspective of the US Marines.<\/p>\n Extras include:<\/p>\n [ad]<\/p>\n ALSO OUT<\/strong> Brideshead Revisited<\/a><\/strong> (2Entertain) > Buy\u00a0L.A.
